July 19 Movie Mix: Sci-Fi Adventure, War, Comedy and Drama Take the Spotlight
“Valerian” takes its audience into the vast city of a thousand planets – Alpha. When an unknown force of darkness threatens this metropolis, two special operatives Valerian and Laureline are sent on a mission to identify the threat and secure Alpha. The success of their mission is also trivial in safeguarding the universe. The film stars Hollywood A-listers Cara Delevingne, Dane DeHaan, Elizabeth Debicki, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Clive Owen and R&B princess Rihanna.
“Dunkirk” sheds light on the true events behind the evacuation of Allied soldiers during the Battle of France in WWII. The action film is set to the 1940’s on the war torn beaches of Dunkirk. Allied soldiers from Britain, Belgium, Canada and France were surrounded by the German Army that time and were evacuated through Operation Dynamo. The film is written and directed by none other than one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of the 21st century, Christopher Nolan. What is interesting is that he wrote it from three perspectives (the land, sea and air) with minimal dialogue to be thorough and detailed, creating suspense. The cast includes Fionn Whitehead, Tom Hardy, Harry Styles, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, James D’Arcy and Damien Bonnard, among others.
Alessandra de Rossi and Empoy Marquez play two Filipinos in Japan in a tale about blindness in “Kita Kita.” Alessandra plays “Lea,” a Velo taxi tour guide who gets into an accident that caused temporary blindness. Empoy, on the other hand, plays the role of “Tonyo.” He is Lea’s neighbor who persistently befriends Lea despite her predicament. Blindness to the both of them turns into something good and unexpected, ironically.
Filipino Oversees Contract Workers are put on the pedestal in “Magtanggol.” To the oppressed and disenfranchised citizens, the Magtanggol clan has always been the answer to their prayers. For years, the clan has been fighting for the Filipino OFW’s when it comes to the harsh realities of their work abroad. The film also relates the truth about the opposition they have encountered in their plight. Tom Rodriguez, Ejay Falcon, Denise Laurel and Dina Bonnevie star in the movie directed by Sigfreid Barros Sanchez.
