Rainy Days Are Coming, Life Hacks You Should’ve Known Before

The transition from summer to the rainy days is one irksome part of the year. Sudden rains, wet walkways, and flood waters can really be a nuisance during this season. Indeed, when it rains, it pours. Don’t you just hate it when you are wearing your favorite OOTD and freshly laundered shoes and then suddenly, the rain ravages it up? Ish.

Certainly, umbrellas, raincoats, and boots are our best friends during the rainy season. But, these cannot save you when major deluge happens. Fortunately, you can level up your ‘rainy season, I’m ready’ game with these life hacks.

Rainy day life hacks you wish you knew before

1. Instant waterproof shoes

If only there is an umbrella especially made for shoes, life during rainy days would be so much better. Point is, no matter how expensive or huge your umbrella is, even if it’s a canopy umbrella like what Manong Ice Cream Vendor uses, it will never be enough to protect your shoes from the raging pooh-pooh rain. But you can always waterproof your shoes using only beeswax and a blow dryer (or just leave it under the sun if it’s still there, up to you). Beeswax is that substance from bees which is often used in making candles, lip balms, sealing envelopes, and even skin moisturizers. All you have to do is to buff your shoes all over using the beeswax. The wax will leave a satin color on your shoes but don’t fret, it will be melted when you blow dry your shoes (or put it under the sun). And, tada! You know have a waterproof shoes, easy as ABC. Watch video below for step-by-step instructions.

2. Keep it dry

It suddenly rained and you weren’t able you buff beeswax on your kicks? Worry not because there’s also a life hack for that. All you need is a newspaper (just get it from under the living room table, there’s a lot!). Just stuff your May 2016 newspaper inside your shoes. Wrap the out-sole with some sheets, and basically cover the whole shoe with newspapers, you do have plenty anyway. Set the shoes aside and let the newspaper do its job of absorbing the  water and also the unpleasant smell.

3. Thank you G for Microfiber Towels

Make it your new golden rule or even mantra: ‘I shall always bring microfiber towels with me every time. I shall put it in my school bag, gym bag, shopping bag, and all the bags that I have so I won’t have to wear wet socks ever.’ You know what I think? Having your socks wet while you are wearing it should be included in the top 10 worst feelings in the world. But thanks to these water-absorbent towels which help absorb most of the moisture, we can live a peaceful life again even if it’s rainy season. Just lay your socks or clothes on a microfiber towel then roll them like a burrito. And then, nip it to remove the moisture.

4. Zip. Locks.

You can never have too much zip locks during rainy seasons. If you down want your gadgets and documents to get soaked on rainwater, just store them on you ziplock. This applies to everyone whether you met the storm by surprise or you just want to brave and prove the storm you work harder than her. Bonus tip when your phone, let’s say, got submerged in the water: You know those little bags with silica gel that comes with new shoes? Use them to dry your phone. Just leave your phone and those silica bags for about 24 hours then those sometimes curious packets will absorb the moisture. By the way, they are called ‘desiccants.’ And yes, you can also use rice for this trick.

5. Be bright

I mean literally. There are times when we just want to stay home because it’s raining and it’s cuddle weather but we just can’t because DepEd/Congressman or Sir/Ma’am hasn’t suspended classes and work yet. When you don’t have a choice but to go out of the house and walk through the streets to get a ride, wear reflective gears. As the skies get darker, you should be ready with your bright colored clothes, a vest or an LED headlamp so cars will see you through the rain and avoid accidents. You can always change when you get to the office or school anyway if you still want to slay that rainy day OOTD.
