5 Things To Know About Road Rage In Cebu City

A road rage incident involving a driver of a Mercedes Benz and a male nurse in Cebu City has gone viral since it was posted on Facebook. The driver who was identified as David Lim Jr. shot and wounded male nurse Ephraim Nuñal on a narrow street on Saturday, March 18, after a confrontation.

The video was taken by a dashboard camera of a motorist who witnessed the incident. The video shows Lim confronting Ephraim and moments after, Lim goes back to his car, gets a gun and shoots the latter two times.

Lim wasn’t alone as he was with his girlfriend Tamae Takahashi. She and Lim immediately left the scene after the shooting. Since then, reports have been giving updates on the incident.

1. David Lim Jr. surrenders.

According to the Inquirer, David Lim Jr. was identified as the driver of the Mercedes-Benz. The report further mentioned that David Lim Jr. has surrendered himself to the authorities on Tuesday, March 21, at around 2 a.m.

Lim was detained at the Provincial Regional Office in Central Visayas. He was then transferred to the stockade of the city police where the road rage was being investigated. David Lim Jr. is the nephew of businessman Peter Lim. The same Peter Lim who met with President Rodrigo Duterte and denied that he was the drug lord the president identified.

2. Secretary Bong Go instrumental in David Lim’s surrender

Special assistant to the President Secretary Bong Go was instrumental to David Lim’s surrender. The same Inquirer report stated that Bebong, David’s mother, sent a text message to Secretary Bong saying, ” Sir Bong, the family decided to follow your advice to surrender my son David Lim Jr. to the regional commander Chief Supt. Noli Taliño tomorrow (Tuesday). Please help us facilitate his surrender and safety.”

True enough, the family surrendered David Lim Jr. to Chief Supt. Nolu Taliño, Central Visayas Regional Director like Secretary Bong Go advised as per Mrs. Lim’s text message.

3. Secretary Bong Go has common acquaintance with Mrs. Bebong Lim, Peter Go

Apparently, Mrs. Bebong Lim and Secretary Bong Go have a common acquaintance, Davao-based businessman Peter Go. The report says Bong Go denies knowing the Lim family personally. It was Peter Lim who brought the concern to Bong Go.

Lim’s mother called Peter Go and asked help on what to do about David, her son.  It was through Peter that Mrs. Lim was able to contact and seek advice from Secretary Bong Go. Bong then advised Mrs. Lim to do the aforementioned action through text.

4. David Lim’s Lawyer said he acted on self-defense

Salatandre, David Lim’s lawyer says his client acted on self-defense. This was a statement released on Tuesday according to the Inquirer. The report further mentioned that Lim’s stay in jail might be short-lived. He said he would post bail once charges were filed in court.

David’s lawyer said the viral video was “edited” to make it look like Lim was the aggressor during the road rage. He added that there were two other men with Nuñal who were bigger. This was the reason why he went back for his gun thinking he might be overpowered. Salatandre said David fired the gun to scare Ephraim and the two other men. Salatandre said, “My client is very sober and calm.”

5. Orlando Salatandre Jr. ex-client was cult leader Ruben Ecleo Jr.

Salatandre is the same lawyer who represented ex -mayor and cult leader Ruben Ecleo Jr., who was convicted for killing his wife in 2012. The cult leader of the group Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association was found guilty of killing his wife Alona Bacolod-Ecleo according to a report by the Inquirer.

Efforts were made to arrest the cult leader but his loyal followers fought back to prevent his arrest resulting in a three-hour gun battle. Until now, Ruben Ecleo Jr. remains at large and has yet to be located.
