As the Marvel Cinematic Universe draws to a close, the entertainment giant sets its eyes on the video game industry. Marvel’s first mission: bring everyone’s one and only web-slinger to console by September 7. Here’s everything you need to know on the upcoming Spider-Man for the PS4.
Spider-Man gets new gadgets
While the game won’t be tied to the films, it looks like the MCU’s rendition of the high-tech spider-suit struck a chord with fans. The new Spider-Man game adopts a ton of the suit’s features and places them at the player’s fingertips. Players will be able to throw web-grenades, plant tripwires, and even scout the area with a drone Spider-Man: Homecoming style. This fits in nicely with the fact that Peter Parker is by canon a tech-whiz. Spider-Man will allow players to gradually improve their gadgets in a similar fashion to other open-world action games.
Zero Microtransactions for Spider-Man
Insomniac Games recently revealed in a rapid-fire interview with GameInformer that “hell no,” there would be no MTX for the title. Considering Spider-Man will be a PS4 exclusive, this is actually surprising. Especially since publisher Sony has previously made clear its push to “explore” the idea. Today, microtransactions are a sad norm in the modern gaming industry. That is why players can always appreciate the decision to leave them out of beloved franchises.
Peter Parker and Mary Jane will be Playable
Gaming has come a long way since 2000’s Spider-Man by Neversoft. So, of course, people expect Peter Parker to be playable this time around. That said, Creative director, Bryan Intihar revealed during the aforementioned interview that Mary Jane will also be a playable character. He also revealed that she will “surprise a lot of people.” This statement has fans speculating of course. Will she actually be a free-roaming character just like Spidey? Will she be locked to quick-time events and plot-device segments? Obviously, we’re hoping it’s the former.
The Avengers May Be in the Game
The recent Spider-Man tech demo featured a tower in New York City with a large “A.” This is obviously the Avengers tower. Given Insomniac’s record and attention to detail to open-world and exploration, this could very well be more than just a visual Easter egg. Intihar mentioned that the main storyline of the game will take place over the course of a few weeks. That should give plenty of time for a world-ending (or at least city-ending) threat to rise, potentially requiring the Avengers to intervene.
Watch out for the Spider-Man PS4 release date on Sept 7.
