Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Suicide Squad was a movie audiences either loved or hated. While critical reception for the movie was mostly negative, David Ayer’s work proved a hit among fans. The commercial success of Suicide Squad has led to the conception of a sequel set for 2019. Of course, WB would definitely prefer to have both commercial success AND good critical reception. That said, here are 5 things that need to happen for Suicide Squad 2 to be a success. El Diablo’s Return in Suicide Squad 2 Despite El Diablo’s heroic death in Suicide Squad, it’s been a popular theory among the fanbase that actor Jay Hernandez will be reprising his role for the sequel. Hernandez has mentioned in numerous interviews that he wants to return for Suicide Squad 2. He has also mentioned an alternate ending to the first movie’s script where his character doesn’t go out in a blaze of glory. Jay Hernandez as El Diablo (Image via verified Suicide Squad Facebook page) The strongest piece of evidence of El Diablo’s return however, comes from the movie itself. Pay attention to Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) at the end of the Quad vs Enchantress fight. As she displays her killswitch tablet to the team, the screen clearly shows that only Slipknot’s portrait is marked as terminated. Everyone else is alive and well, including El Diablo. Katana’s Backstory Karen Fukuhara sa Katana (Image via verified Suicide Squad Facebook Page) Given the secretive advertising campaign of the first Suicide Squad movie, it is unlikely we’ll be getting any official statements from Warner Bros. However, the Suicide Squad’s cast has given statements on what they want to happen. Actress Karen Fukuhara hopes to explore Katana’s origins. Given that some of the complaints by critics were the “shallow” characters, expanding on the stories of Boomerang, Katana, and the rest of Task Force X might be the way to go. Suicide Squad 2 Source Material In terms of a main plot line, even the comic books might be of little help. Ayer wrote Suicide Squad in six weeks, and the Enchantress plot is only loosely based on the villainess’s comic book appearances. And with a new writer (Christina Hodson), it is even more difficult to speculate the direction the sequel will take. WB can deal with this by actually referring to DC Comics source material. An adaptation of John Ostrander’s Suicide Squad comics or the wildly successful animated film Batman: Assault on Arkham might be the right move. Suicide Squad 2’s New Screenwriter Suicide Squad fans have viewed Hodson as a bit of a wild card. On one hand, her script “Shut In” appeared on the 2012 Black List, which is good. On the other hand, the resulting film was rated 0% at Rotten Tomatoes… which is bad. She is also going to be working with Michael Bay on an upcoming Bumblebee movie. This is something that can be interpreted in either direction. Hodson will be working on the upcoming Harley Quinn spinoff before even approaching Suicide Squad however, so at least fans will be able to get a sample of her handiwork before the sequel’s release. If her script works fine, then more power to miss Hodson. If it fails however, WB had better consider someone else for the job. Captain Boomerang Steps Up his Game Suicide Squad’s Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) did an excellent job as Captain Boomerang. However, it really can’t be doubted that he was the joke of Task Force X. One of the film’s glaring weaknesses was Boomerang’s questionable role in the team. Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang (Image via verified Suicide Squad Facebook Page) If there is any future at all for this character, he has to actually appear competent, and a few more action scenes might do the trick. For this purpose, WB may refer to The CW’s Arrow, where an incarnation of the villain singlehandedly assaulted ARGUS with six bladed, boomerangs. Why stop there? They could even take tech from Michael Bay’s rendition of the Shredder in the first TMNT movie. No, not that terrible piece of armor… I mean the magnetic returning blades. That’s just a short list of 5 things that need to happen for the Suicide Squad 2 movie. Any other points Warner Bros. needs to improve on? Let us know.
