Froilan chose to sing “Dance With My Father” for three fathers he had in his life. First is his biological father who passed away when he was just six years old. The next is is his stepfather. Eventually, he and Froilan’s mother separated. The third and most father figure he had was his grandfather who passed away in December last year. While Froilan was performing, hurados were intently listening to him like Hurado Mitoy who had his eyes locked on Froilan on stage. Hurado Erik Santos said he was moved by Froilan’s performance and loved every aspect of his performance. He called him unpredictable and continues to surprise the hurados. Next on stage was inspiring teacher Joylaine Canonio. Joylaine parents once thought that she had broken their trust and lied to them. She joined a competition far from their province and her parents thought that she spent the night with her boyfriend. Joylaine proved them wrong and now sings “Ngayon at Kailanman” for her family saying “Sa pamilya ko lang ako uuwi.” Joylaine gave a powerful start to her version in contrast to the original style of Basil Valdez and of course ended with her a powerful high note as always. Punong hurado Rey Valera said it is a fact that she could effortlessly reach high notes and just needed to work on stage presence. Tawag Ng Tanghalan Feb. 22, Round 3 Awit Sa Pamilya Performances, Julia Faith Joaquin and Carl Malone Montecido Julia Faith Joaquin was next on stage. Julia Faith remembers her father who works as a Chef in a cruise ship. Her father had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital in Italy. Julia’s father was alone in the hospital since Julia and the family were far away but was discharged after two weeks. With her father and family in mind, Julia sings “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” Julia was revealed to be part of the bottom two yesterday. Hurado Mitoy advised Julia to remove ranking from her mind and just focus on giving her best. Mitoy said today’s song choice and performance was good and she was able to show a different side of Julia. Next semi-finalist on stage was Carl Malone Montecido. Carl chose to sing “Basta’t Kasama Kita” for his family. He belongs to a big family; the fifth among 6 other siblings. He knows that they are not rich but as long as he and his family are together, they have everything. It was his family who encouraged Carl to try Tawag Ng Tanghalan for the second time since he lost pursuing his fifth win last year. Hurado Karla Estrada loved how precise and clean his voice was and added she didn’t see any inhibition in his performance. Tawag Ng Tanghalan Feb. 22, Round 3 Awit Sa Pamilya Performances, Jex De Castro and Sam Mangubat. Jazelyn Cascano Jex De Castro was the next on stage. Jex joined Tawag Ng Tanghalan two times and wasn’t that successful the first time as he also lost pursuing his fifth win. It was his parents who encouraged him to press on and join again. He now sings “Ikaw” by Martin Nievera, dedicating it to his father and mother who didn’t lose hope and pushed him to pursue his dream. Jex sang beautifully putting in his signature long flawless notes. As soon as Jex finished his last note, he became so emotional that he was in tears which also moved Vice Ganda as well. Hurado Karylle was inspired by Jex’s story and loved how string his support system was. She said Jex’s performance was risky because it was a classic song but he was able to put in his creativity and his “magic.” Next semi-finalist was Sam Mangubat. Sam is a pastor’s kid and saw himself as a bit of a rebel because of his parent’s and other people’s exepectations. His family then experienced financial problems and that’s when he realized he needed to be better. Sam sings “Do I Make You Proud” by Taylor Hicks hoping his parents would hear him and say, “Oo anak, proud kami sa’yo.” Punong hurado Rey Valera called him a “non conformist” saying his song choice and style were always unique. He alway wanted to be different which is not a bad thing. Rey Valera advised him to also think of other groups of the audience whenever he chooses his songs aside from internet users and teens to expand his fan base. Last semi-finalit on stage was Hazelyn Cascano. “The Greatest Love Of All” was Hazelyn’s “Awit sa Pamilya” song which she dedicates to her parents. Her father worked hard as a taxi driver and mechanic to put Hazelyn and her two other siblings to school. Hazelyn’s mother also sacrificed a lot to take care of the three of them. She says the greatest love is the love she found and got from her parents. Durable and powerful were the words hurado Erik used to described Hazelyn’s voice. He just noticed how she had the tendency to have sharp notes especially when she feels too excited. He advised Hazelyn to rest more as she still has more days to come.
