Tawag Ng Tanghalan Aug 16 performances, daily winner, and champion

First contender, Wilmer Abalos. This teacher from Valenzuela, Metro Manila is also a student. He teaches grade 5 students during weekdays and studies his Ph.D. in education during weekends. Wilmer is the third among 10 other siblings and puts some of them through school. Singing “Climb Every Mountain” on the TNT stage is both for his dream and his family.

Judge Jed Madela liked Wilmer’s song choice and said he gave a strong start which caught his attention and attention of the audience. He said he had precise notes and his performance was full of emotion. Judge Karylle also loved his song choice and appreciated how he gave a little twist to the song with his vocal riffs. “You had me at ‘climb’,” she said.

Second contender, Kimberly Solde. Kimberly sang Yeng Constantino’s “Bulag, Pipi, at Bingi.” She sings for her family and hopes that her voice would pave the way for her family to have a better life. This Grade 9 student from Laguna just recently formed a band with her classmates. It seems Yeng really is one of her musical influences. She does sound like the “Chinito” singer.

Head Judge Louie Ocampo said there was something intriguing about Kimberly’s voice which he loved. It was so unique that with her first few notes she already caught his attention. It became more interesting when she let out a growl towards the middle of the song. He also advised her to have eye contact with the audience.

Third contender, Melindy Opendo. Melindy has her own sari-sari store in Cebu City. She’s busy with that on weekdays but on weekends, she sings with her band. This is how she provides for her only daughter and for her other siblings. This single mom and breadwinner would do anything for her family. Part of that is joining TNT singing “Umiiyak Ang Puso” by April Boy Regino. She hopes her years of training since she was 10 years old would pay off today.

Judge K Brosas loved how confident Melindy was on stage. Towards the chorus, she belted out a deep voice which she liked. But towards the end, she went from deep to high notes. K Brosas advised her to go for it next time she hits those high notes because she felt she was a bit hesitant to do it. Guest judge, bossa nova singer Sitti said she liked Melindy’s voice but she was waiting for a bit more emotion or feeling to go with it. Other than that, it was a good performance.

TNT Aug 15 daily winner, face-off, and champion. Three contenders but the judges had to choose one. Today’s daily winner garnering an average score of 92 percent is Wilmer Abalos.

For the face-off, Wednesday winner Wilmer took on Peabo Bryson and sang “Love Always Finds A Way.” Wilmer got lost somewhere in the middle of the song. He struggled to get back on track, eventually found his way, and was able to pull through ’till the end. Two-time defending champion Raymundo Alvarez, on the other hand, sang “Dance With My Father,” hoping to get that third win.

TNT Aug 16 champion garnering an average score of 95 percent is Raymundo Alvarez. This is Raymundo’s third win. Two more and he becomes a TNT semi-finalist.
