Tawag Ng Tanghalan Feb. 23 Musical Influence Performances, Joylaine Canonio Joylaine Canonio is first to take the stage. Inspired by Sarah Geronimo’s confidence since Joylaine was 10 years old, she now sings Sarah G’s “Forever’s Not Enough.” Joylaine saw how Sarah believed in herself and in her talent. This pushed Joylaine to join singing contests and believe in herself as well. She definitely believed in herself this time giving justice to Sarah’s hit through hitting those signature high notes. Hurado Louie Ocampo said he was much happier now that she saw Joylaine much relaxed. Next on stage was Jex De Castro. Jex says he owes a big percent of his singing style to Gary Valenciano. He loves how much heart Gary puts into his songs. Jex most especially loves how Gary shifts from his natural voice to his falsetto voice, a trademark of Mr. Pure Energy. He now tries to give the best performance for his idol as he sings “Ikaw Lamang.” Punong Hurado Rey Valera said he admires him for his determination, will power and his motivation to control his destiny. Jex joined the show two times when he failed the first time. Tawag Ng Tanghalan Feb. 23 Musical Influence Performances, Hazelyn Cascano, Froilan Canlas, Carl Malone Montecido Next semi-finalist on stage, Hazelyn Cascano. Hazelyn’s musical influence is Jennifer Hudson. She loves Jennifer’s super powerful and deep full voice. Hazelyn says she got her “growling” style from her idol and was inspired to bring out her deep full voice because of her as well. When Jennifer lost weight, Hazelyn looked up to her more. To make Jennifer Hudson proud and to fight for her place, Hazelyn sang Jennifer Hudson’s version of “I Have Nothing.” Hurado Ogie said today, Hazelyn was able to prove that she has what it takes to fight and win in this competition. Next on stage was Froilan Canlas. Froilan is very much inspired by Freddie Aguilar’s music. He sang Freddie’s hit, “Minamahal Kita.” It was because of Aguilar’s music and lyrics that Froilan came to love OPM. He also loved how Freddie Aguilar’s song speak so much of the love for his country. Punong Hurado Rey Valera said, “I am just so amazed.” He liked the way he moved on stage and how confident he was while he was performing even if his song wasn’t really a contest piece. Carl Malone Montecido was next. Carl Malone’s musical influence is R&B singer Jay-R. He loves Jay-R’s style and tries as much as he can to infuse this style to his performances. Carl was able to meet him in one of TNT online’s episodes. “Bakti Pa Ba” was the songs that Carl chose and hoped that his “kuya” Jay-R would be listening. “Excellent song choice” says hurado Karylle. She also loved how accurate Carl was in his vocal riffs. Hurado Billy, Jay-R’s friend, said “Boy can sing!” Tawag Ng Tanghalan Feb. 23 Musical Influence Performances, Julia Faith Joaquin, Sam Mangubat Julia Faith Joaquin is next singing “Where Do I Begin.” Julia has liked Shirley Bassi’s music ever since she was just six years old. It only took a matter of time before she realized that Bassi’s music has influenced her in many ways. Julia loves how Shirley Bassi interprets her songs but most of all she loves her voice and personality. Hurado Jaya said Julia’s singing style is unique and she shouldn’t change her style just because people say so. Instead, take what bashers say and let that fuel her to explore more. Last semi-finalst on stage was Sam Mangubat. Sam used to hear Jon Bon Jovi’s song on the radio. Eventually, he searched for this singer on YouTube, watched a few videos and immediately loved him. Sam liked his voice but the thing about Jon Bon Jovi that he liked most was how he mvoed on stage. He hopes that he would also be known as a world-class performer like his idol. Sam sang “You Give Love A Bad Name,” this time, without his signature bonnet. Hurado Ogie loved his pop voice and “angas” on stage which he thinks are Sam’s strengths.
