Tawag Ng Tanghalan Jan 10 Episode: Julia Joaquin Goes For 3rd Win

POPCORN TIME LIVE BLOG RECAP: Yesterday’s episode of Tawag Ng Tanghalan wasn’t really great for three contenders. For the first time in ABS-CBN’s “Tawag Ng Tanghalan sa Showtime,” head judge Rey Valera signaled the gong for all three contenders on the show. Punong Hurado Rey said on Saturday that he will be more strict in judging on Monday, since the holidays are over. This gave defending champion Julia Faith Joaquin her second win without a battle. Will Julia get her third win today? Most importantly, will she battle a daily winner today?

On a lighter side, it was also a great episode for fans of semi finalists Froilan, Hazelyn, Sam Mangubat and Jeramie. The four semi finalists sang “What’s going On” by Marvin Gaye and did individual performances on TNT online.

Tawag Ng Tanghalan Jan 10 Performances

Rommel Cholo Cahiwat from Makati City was the first to hopefully break yesterday’s three-time gong. Cholo is 38 years old and has been a band vocalist for eight years. He and his band have been performing around Asia like Korea, Indonesia and Hongkong. Cholo spent what he had for the medical treatment of his father who suffered from cancer. His dad and grandfather passed away and now he has taken the responsibility to take care of his six other siblings. Cholo sang “Almost Over You” hoping Punong Hurado Rey Valera won’t signal for the gong.

“Agaw attention” were the words Hurado Karylle used to describe Cholo and his performance. His years of experience paid off as he was seen very confident on stage. Hurado Louie agreed with what Karylle said and mentioned he liked his performance minus  too much vibrato which needs a bit of improvement.

Next on stage was twenty-year-old Christelle Tiquis. This band vocalist based in San Pablo Laguna is also a portrait painter and artist. She sings and paints for a living to help her youngest sibling who had a stroke when she was only 3 years old. Christelle also teaches painting to children during the weekends.

Christelle sang “It Might Be You” with her love, Jolo, as inspiration. Punong Hurado Rey said it was amazing that Christelle was able to execute her broken notes well and didn’t add anything apart from that because he was satisfied with her performance.

Datu Canapi was the last contender for the day. Datu is originally from Cotabato City and is now based in Quezon city. He is 39 years old and works as an operation officer for a manpower agency. Datu recently discovered but doubted that he had the talent for singing and eventually took the leap and joined his first ever contest, Tawag Ng Tanghalan. That’s not the first leap, his second leap was singing one of hurado Ogie Alcasid’s hit,  “Nandito Ako.”

Hurado Jaya enjoyed Datu’s performance and said Datu had the voice and vocal control. What did “Nandito Ako” original singer Ogie have to say to Datu’s performance? Ogie said Datu doesn’t have to doubt if he had the voice anymore because he indeed has the voice and in fact, he was a good singer.

Tawag Ng Tanghalan Jan 10 Champion, Tuesday Winner

All contenders gave performances that indeed impressed the judges. But today, Christelle Tiquis proved she was the best among the rest garnering an average score of 92 percent. For the face-off. Christelle Tiquis sang “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Defending champion Julia Faith Joaquin went theatrical with the song “Don’t Rain On My Parade” hoping to keep her place as defending champion.

The judges have decided, today’s winner is — Julia Faith Joaquin winning with an average score of 92.8 percent. This is Julia’s third win on the show, two more and she makes it as Tawag ng Tanghalan semi-finalist. Tawag Ng Tanghalan airs on ABS-CBN, Monday to Saturdays at noon.
