Tawag Ng Tanghalan Jan 13 Performances

Eva Castillo is the first contender to take the stage. This fourty-seven-year-old mother from Tondo, Manila sang “The Greatest Performance Of My Life” by Shirley Bassey. Eva has been joining singing contests since she was eight years old. In those years, she met Regine Velasquez and Eva even beat her in some of those contests. Now, tables have turned since Regine is now an acclaimed singer. The songbird helped Eva get into competitions on TV however, Eva now suffers from a kidney stone problem and is due to be operated on for a kidney transplant soon. Her performance is dedicated to her family hoping to win the competition and give a better life for them.

Hurado KBrosas loved her confidence and the raspiness of her voice which reflects her strength in life. Hurado Ogie says she knew Eva, and said she truly gave “the greatest performance of her life.” He added how proud he was that she knew her.

Pampanga’s bet Aljon Gutierrez was next on stage. Aljon’s parents are both sick, so he and his brothers and sisters took it upon themselves to help each other put up a “sari-sari” store for their parents and help out. So young as Aljon is at 19 years old, he sings for special events and works as a “kargador” for tiles to get by. His grandfather dreams of seeing Aljon on stage so he gives his best performance singing “Born For You.” “Swabe” was the word that hurado Billy Crawford used to describe Aljon’s performance. Billy and Ogie just advised Aljon to find a certain technique to make his vowels sound better when hitting high notes.

Third contender was Aspher Sanchez Cebu. Aspher has two children with her first partner. She now stays with her current partner and they both work for an autoparts shop. Aside from the shop, she also sings for special events. For the competition, she sang Celine Dion’s “The Reason” showcasing her high vocal riffs. Hurado Mitoy noticed Aspher’s song choice wasn’t something she was very comfortable which compromised her performance. Aspher confirmed that she doesn’t usually sing that piece and she was advised by Hurado Ogie to pick songs that she is confident about.

Last contender for the day was eighteen-year-old Sweet Xena Estrada from Zamboanga City. Apart from singing, Sweet Xena is also fond of drawing. She is an incoming first year college student waiting for the results of her exam. While waiting she takes care of her niece. Sweet hopes to win the contest to help raise what she needs for her tuition fee. Sweet chose to sing Adele’s hit, “Rolling in the Deep.” Hurado Nyoy Volante said they were very impressed with her performance but called it unusual because she put a lot of styles and riffs that were too much for the song.
