First challenger for today’s show was Anna Maria Daban from Metro Manila. Anna is twenty nine years old. She is the youngest in the family and has five other siblings. Anna stopped school and chose to work as a singer in Korea instead to help provide for her family. There she met her husband and now they have two kids together. Anna sang “Love Takes Time” giving her best to impress the judges. Song choice was a factor for Hurado Karylle. She said Anna would’ve done better if she chose a song that suits her voice. Hurado Erik agreed with Karylle and said OPM songs fit Anna better.

Maria Panaligan from Canada was next on stage. Maria is originally from Lipa City, Batangas and migrated to Canada when she was just seven years old. Maria is now eighteen and recently came home partly to audition for Tawag Ng Tanghalan ang partly to spend time with her family now that she’s graduated high school. Maria has been joining singing contests in Canada. She looks up to Sarah Geronimo and Regine Velasquez but chose to sing Grease’s hit, “Hopelessly Devoted To You” for today’s competition. Hurado Rey Valera noticed how simple the song was but Maria was able to deliver alternative notes that fit the song well.

Necie Diaz from Cebu City was next to prove that she has a chance to win the competition. Necie is a twenty-nine-year old band vocalist who was given the responsibility to take care of her one-year-old niece. Her sister has a different family. Now, Necie wants to legally adopt her niece. Necie gave her own rendition of Natalie Cole’s song “Starting Over Again.” Necie’s voice was very soothing says Hurado K Brosas and Louie Ocampo says she had the voice quality and the ability to tell the story of the song. It was just the intonation that concerned him a bit, but everything else was good.

Tawag Ng Tanghalan January 4 Champion, Wednesday Winner

Among all three contenders, the hurados have decided — Maria Panaligan is today’s daily winner garnering an average score of 91.6 percent. For the battle round, Maria chose “Basang Basa Ulan” by Aegis. A rather interesting song considering she is from Canada.

Defending champion Emily Abello fought for her third win with Angela Bofill’s “One Hello.” After a few minutes of deliberation, hurados have decided. Today’s winner is–the NEW defending champion, Maria Panaligan with  an average score of 91.6 percent.
