POPCORN TIME LIVE BLOG/RECAP: Joylaine Canonio once again got a hold of the “golden mikropono” when she bested daily winner Rushyen Buensuceso from the Visayas, in Saturday’s episode of Tawag Ng Tanghalan sa Showtime. In the January 23 episode, will she be able to get her fifth win in order to be named as a semi-finalist?

Today’s first contender is Christina Joy Laher of Quezon City, Metro Manila. She comes from a family of singers – both her parents, and her siblings have a love for music. Aside from singing, she also loves to bake and sells her products to friends and family. She said that she joined Tawag to become a professional singer but also to help her start her own bakeshop business. She took the stage singing ‘”Jar of Hearts” and was able to finish her song without the gong being banged. Hurado Kaye Brosas commented on the good quality of her voice as well as her own style. She however noted that Christina had some difficulty at the start but her performance was good. Hurado Louie Ocampo was very happy with her performance. He also liked her voice quality which had a “current” quality about it.

Denise Gonzales of Morong, Rizal is a Grade 11 student who grew in the United States. Her primary motivation for joining Tawag was to make her late grandfather proud. While she was growing up in the U.S., she joined many singing competitions. She sang “I Look To You” by Whitney Houston. Punong hurado Yeng Constantino said that she liked the clarity and the tone of her voice. She however said that if she chose a song that was much more suited for her voice, it would shine some more.

The third contender today is a Grade 11 student who hails from Tacloban, Yssa Romano. A daughter of a teacher, she also helps her mother who is the sole breadwinner of the family, by performing in gigs and by selling homemade Japanese cakes. She said that the main reason for joining to help her mom in providing for their family. Hurado Billy Crawford said that the judges were impressed with her performance. He said that he had a very good voice and she only needs to a little bit more work in terms of confidence. Hurado Jaya said her voice had a sweet quality about it, but had potential to be powerful.

Tawag Ng Tanghalan Joylaine And Yssa Face Off

Today’s daily winner is Yssa Romano with an average score of 91.6 per cent. She will face off with defending champion Joylaine Canonio. She also won the daily prize of PhP 10

After the commercial break, Yssa comes back on stage to sing Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years.”  Joylaine’s defending piece is “Back In Your Arms.” As Joylaine was singing, the judges were clearly impressed with her as always. Getting an average score of 92.8 per cent, the winner today is still Joylaine. This is her fifth win which allows her to join the semi-finals. Her winnings to this day now total PhP 135,000.
