Alicia Keys, makeup, No makeup movement

Alicia Keys is on fire with her #Nomakeup Revolution and is causing others to jump right in for all the right reasons. This phenomenon may seem to be a much-ado-without-nothing issue to makeup aficionadas, but ever since that essay Alicia wrote for Lenny, Lena Dunham’s online magazine, the social media has gone crazy. According to The New York Times, Keys’s willingness to do this caused a backlash against her, and then a backlash to the backlash.

Alicia Keys: The Voice, NYFW Tom Ford Show and MTV Video Music Awards

Makeup Tyrant, Ms. Keys, has been nothing but true to her revolution. She has always performed without makeup everywhere like in the Democratic National Convention, on “The Voice,” at the NYFW Tom Ford show, and even at the MTV Video Music Awards. Although this may be noble, others feel different about the kerfuffle. The New York Post calls this “Makeup-gate 2016” and based on how they see it, this movement has grown to be loud and bizarre. #Nomakeup is empowering and brave but it is considered annoying to some maybe because of the backlash-against-backlash loop. Some takeaways included slamming Alicia for not being pretty enough or that she was deceitful because she still was wearing tinted moisturizer. It goes on and on my friends. “It” is #nomakeup — a meme, a movement, a cri de Coeur,” as the New York Times describes.

#Nomakeup Revolution

Despite various opinions, however, the No Makeup trend is rising and is getting noticed even more. Among those famous stars going for the No Makeup Movement is Nicole Richie. In an interview with People, she says that she prefers the bare face as a personal choice because she advocates skin health. Makeup clogs the pores on her skin, so she ditched putting on makeup.

Tamron Hall, news anchor for Today, was also inspired to join in. In an interview with Alicia Keys on the show, Hall wipes off her make up on live television with Keys and then takes a selfie of their makeup-free faces. The revolution is definitely making waves and the word “empowered” is expressed by those who have supported the movement.

The 15-time Grammy award winner continues to empower women and she is relentless in her plight to not cover up anymore. “Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing,” Keys wrote.
