Well played, CW… Releasing an episode called “Monster” on November 1. Welcome to another Popcorn Time recap. Specifically, we’ll be doing The Flash Season 3, Episode 5. And this one is a fairly interesting run.
Last we saw of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and his friends, Harrison Wells had returned to Earth Two. He had made sure not to leave the team short-handed though, and we were introduced to a third Harrison Wells, nicknamed “H. R.” As usual, before we get into what happened this week: Spoiler Alert
The Flash Season 3 Episode 5: Monsters Everywhere
So the episode follows two monsters: One is a literal Kaiju-style reptile, and the other is Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), who is slowly being transformed into Killer Frost. Caitlin takes a brief leave of absence from the team to meet her mother (Susan Walters); a renowned biophysicist, while Cisco (Carlos Valdes), Barry, and HR find a way to stop a giant monster from tearing up the city.
The giant reptile is surprisingly elusive for something of its size, as it vanishes without a trace after each of its short-lived rampages. H. R. tries to help out the team by offering some technology that could help bring the monster down.
Harrison Wells’ New Dark Secret
Despite the new Wells’ willingness to help the team however, it looks like Cisco can’t shake the feeling that something is off. The previous Wells did warn them that this guy was not the right Harrison Wells for the job, after all. Either way, HR seems like an overexcited intern… until he makes a suspicious recording about the “real reason he is here.”
And lo and behold. As it turns out, HR is not a scientist, but a disgraced novelist looking for new content for his book. In essence, he’s a conman. Honestly, he should be off the team just for lying, but somehow, he manages to convince the team to let him stay for a while.
Barry And Julian’s Day Out
Barry gets tired of Julian Albert’s (Tom Felton) hostility toward him. He cuts a deal to give him his half of the forensics lab if they can have a day together. We learn quite a bit about Julian as well. He explains how he doesn’t need a sob story to hate metahumans, and how he just observes how people who receive these gifts end up squandering them in lives of crime.
Barry notices Julian is almost jealous in a sense. They have another encounter with the giant monster later that day, before they split up and start tracking down leads on their own.
A not-so-surprising plot twist ensues when Julian tracks down the monster’s next location, and Flash figures out that the beast everyone has been afraid of was just a hologram. Flash prevents the police from opening fire on the hologram, in turn preventing civilians from getting hurt. Julian meanwhile, nearly shoots the hologram’s operator. The mastermind turns out to be just a fifteen year-old kid who got tired of being bullied.
Running From monsters: Julian From his past And Caitlin from herself
Julian confesses about his past to Barry. He tells him of his wealth, and his family heritage, and how he wanted more from life than that.
Meanwhile, Caitlin leaves her mother’s laboratory after a particularly hostile encounter with one of the laboratory technicians. She nearly kills him, but her mother intervenes, telling her she didn’t raise a killer. Caitlin later receives a message from her mother however. She tells her that the more Caitlin uses her abilities, the harder it will be to reverse the changes to her body.
Aaand that’s the end of the episode. It wasn’t exactly as exciting as I had hoped it would be. Still, the more Killer Frost teasers they sneak in, the happier I’ll be. I was also glad we got to know more about Julian Albert. He seems to be a deep and rather colorful character they can play a lot of cards with.
