Well here we are for this week’s recap of The Flash. Last episode left us with Barry Allen beaten and pinned against a pillar by none other than Savitar: the self-proclaimed God of Speed. Season 5 Episode 7 gives us a taste of this new speedster’s true power. And for the main course, we get the episode’s titular namesake: Killer Frost.
Let’s get right into it. Spoiler alert.
Flash vs Savitar
The episode picks up where we last left off: with Barry (Grant Gustin) confronted by an alien-looking being who calls himself Savitar. The entity demonstrates his powers by dragging Barry through Central City so quickly, he felt they were teleporting and not running. In fact, when Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) try to track him, he seems to be everywhere at any given moment.
They eventually locate Flash and Savitar at the waterfront. Cisco and Caitlin team up to save Barry, and Savitar escapes. Back at STAR Labs, HR comments how the name Savitar is derived from “Savitr,” the Hindu god of motion.
Caitlin Becomes Killer Frost
Well, we knew it would happen eventually. Episode 8 follows Caitlin as she attempts to track down Alchemy in the hopes of stopping her transformation. Unfortunately, her powers seem to affect her psychologically. She displays increased aggression and hostility, even kidnapping Julian Albert (Tom Felton) in search of her target.
Julian tracks down potential leads to Alchemy. The Flash then arrives to confront Killer Frost, but she escapes. Julian meanwhile, is knocked out cold.
Team Flash attempts to capture Caitlin. Unfortunately, the team experiences a severe lack of cohesion. Flash is still recovering from a leg injury he sustained from his fight with Caitlin. Cisco found out that Flashpoint was the reason for his brother’s death. He decides to go after her alone, fulfilling his prophetic vision from the previous episode.
Wally West is Kid Flash!
Here’s another transformation we completely saw coming. Still, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) turning into Kid Flash is a welcome part of the story. Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and HR (Tom Cavanagh) attempt to cut Wally out of his coccoon, only to have it explode. Wally emerges, but his body and mind appear out of sync. Barry realizes they need Caitlin to help Wally. He manages to get through to her, and they find a way to stabilize the new team member.
Julian Albert’s Secret, Alchemy Revealed
Barry approaches a hospitalized Julian Albert to ask that he spare Caitlin the justice system. Julian agrees, but on the condition that Barry quits his job. He explains how he cannot work with someone who puts “friendship” above justice.
Julian is then approached that evening by Savitar, who mentions that only with Julian’s help can he finally return. Julian appears unwilling, but he gives in. He opens one of his drawers to reveal the mask of Dr. Alchemy.
I honestly wish Julian Albert was NOT Alchemy because it was too easy of an explanation. But I suppose I can live with it. In hindsight, it elaborates why he hates metahumans so much. In the episode “Monster,” he explained how so many are given gifts, and they choose to become criminals. I can’t say anyone can disagree with him. He gave these people their powers after all.
