While the heat of the Senate hearing on the death of UST Law student Horacio Castillo is fueling aversion from the masses, the Faculty of Civil Law is making its own stand on the tragic issue. For one, they have officially labeled the alleged frat Aegis Juris as ‘not recognized’ under the school.

It has been days after Horacio’s death shocked the UST community, and the nation. It wasn’t something that could easily be shrugged off. For this, the UST Civil Law faculty have decided to take a stand against the injustice immediately after the incident. On Sept. 18, only two days after the night of Aegis Juris’ ‘welcoming rites,’ the school sent out a memo suspending all members of the frat from entering the school. The Frat office and its library were also closed down.

And on Sept. 26, the school dean Nilo Divina announced that Aegis Fraternity is officially ‘unrecognized. He tells GMA: “For this year, Aegis Juris is not recognized… it must be a legitimate organization, composed of bona fide students and they should not engage in hazing in any manner or form.”

Official names of the members have also been an issue to netizens on Twitter. Some users want the names to be released, but because the organization has failed to gain accreditation by the school, an official list has not been released.

Justice for Horacio Accounts on Social Media Uploaded by UST students

The inexcusable death of Horacio Castillo has awakened the nation. Especially after knowing that these supposed ‘future lawyers’ had broken the laws they are expected to preach and uphold. Netizens– particularly the 22-year-old victim’s friends and colleagues, thus created accounts on social media to ensure that justice is met.

On Facebook and Twitter, there are accounts namedJustice For Horacio that post screen captures of group chats, comments– all that could possibly be dug up against the Aegis Juris Fraternity. Some of these screencaps such as those taken from the Aegis Juris chat on the day of Horacio’s death have shed light on alleged suspect John Paul Solano’s narrative. These screen captures could even be a subject of incriminating evidence in court.

As the case continues, senators like Grace Poe have tweeted in response to these accounts. In the post, she asks everyone to ‘look beyond the fraternity.’
