“Alas Diyes Bente Kwatro”: Love In The Office

According to Ms. Cumla, when Emerson Company invited her to do a piece, they specifically asked that it be about love that happens in an office setting. After her performance, local artist Daryl Ong will also be performing at the party.

As part of preparing to write her piece, she first listened to some of Daryl Ong’s songs and chose the song “Stay” as her inspiration and basis for her spoken word piece. She thought that it would be good if her performance is also connected to that of Ong’s.

In the first part of her piece, she describes the “kilig” and the giddiness that she felt during the early days of her relationship. She marks the time, 10:24 a.m., as the time she saw for the first time she saw him. As the piece goes on, she also talks about how she was happy with the relationship even though it was not allowed.

Doubt Takes Over, Love Loses

Then, the roller coaster of emotions start. At some point, she begins to doubt the other person and his feelings for her. She attaches so much meaning to actions like not looking into her eyes when they talk, or avoiding her when she approaches him, or keeping quiet when asked to talk. The hurt is so obvious and so apparent that she is in tears. After she makes a final attempt to talk things over, she gets hurt some more because the person left her hanging and did not show up.

“Alas Diyes Bente Kwatro”: Love Is Lost

Out of desperation, the main character decides to go and confront the guy one last time. Upon arriving at his place, however, she discovers the real problem that was going on with the other person. He did not after all lose his love for her. He loved her so much that he decided to keep away from her so that she does not get hurt, especially when she finds out that he is sick.

According to Ms. Cumla, this is how she interpreted the song “Stay” when it said, “But now, now that you’re gone, all I can do is pray for you.” In her piece, the main character’s hurt goes on, as she arrives at the time when her loved one is at his death bed. She marks the time, 10:24, as the time he leaves her forever.

Ms. Cumla also emphasized the lesson she wished to convey with this piece: “Minsan, nauuna pa yung galit natin ang hindi natin subukan makausap pa yung tao. Kaya minsan, yung pagdududa, humahantong sa wakas na hindi na maibabalik pa.”
