As incredible as the case is, it reflects a ton about the condition of the Philippine Society’s health and the need for awareness in proper health care. The peculiar tale speaks about the sons and daughter of Leonisa– a mother who lives in Zamboanga del Norte. She has a total of six children, and three of which, including the eldest, did not ‘grow up.’ WATCH: ‘Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho’ Episode on three siblings that remain as babies Oddly enough, their eldest son Jeto is only 22 inches tall. He is supposedly 18 years old. He doesn’t speak a coherent language and is the weakest of all of them. May-may is their third child who is two inches taller than Jeto. She is supposedly 14 years old; and fortunately, she can walk, unlike her eldest brother. After two more children who were deemed growing normally, Leonisa gives birth to her last child, who is also not getting any bigger now. He is also 22 inches tall. It is said that the case of these children is not Dwarfism but is Cretinism. According to Endocrinologist Oliver Dampil, the sizes of their body parts are proportionate. Although Dwarfism can be proportionate and disproportionate, the symptoms lean more on Cretinism than the former such as arrest in mental development as well as physical and sluggish movements. Doctor Dampil suggests the cause as a lack of the thyroid hormone and iodine during the maternal period. Coincidentally, there have been other cases of Cretinism in the region. The cause seemed to stem from homes being ‘too remote,’ malnutrition, poverty, and famine. This is why experts suggest pregnant women take regular trips to the doctor and self-awareness on what needs to be done for the betterment of childbirth.
