This week’s Popcorn Movie Mix combines edge-of-your-seat moments, mind boggling pscyho-thrillers, bipolar poetry, and all-time Pinoy humor. Films now showing include Alien Covenant, Bliss, Touched By Fire, and Our Mighty Yaya.

Depending on how the week went by, any of these five films will surely be therapeutic – whether through a good laugh, catharsis or in by the some classic heart-pounding suspense. Plus, simply leaving the cubicle we have ever so nicely tucked ourselves in for seven days is a worthy cause for hitting the silver screen.

Michael Fassbender, Iza Calzado, Katie Holmes, and Ai-Ai delas Alas Among May 11 Films

Michael Fassbender stars as a synthetic android Walter in Alien prequel series. Walter was created by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation to assist a crew of couples on their mission to colonize a newly discovered planet. What seems to be paradise lost turns into hell unleashed with the presence of a voracious alien predator. The film is directed by Ridley Scott and also stars Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, and James Franco, among others.

Iza Calzado is paralyzed actress in the mercy of a cruel husband and a sadistic nurse. The psychological thriller by Heneral Luna Filipino director Jerrold Tarog is causing a stir with its sensitive content. It is about a 30-year-old actress who dreams of grabbing the spotlight by producing her own film. Things don’t go as expected and she gets into an accident leaving her immobile and a prisoner in her own home. She loses her mind because of the sick suffering her husband and sinister nurse inflict upon her. The film premiered and was received well at the 12th Osaka Asian Film Festival held on March 2017. Iza won the Yakushi Pearl Award for  Best Performer. Ian Veneracion, TJ Trinidad and Adrienne Vergara make up the rest of the main cast.

Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby star as bipolar poets who fall in love. The story is about Carla (Katie) and Marco (Luke) who meet at a psychiatric hospital  because of their bipolar disorder. As they share the same heart in poetry, they find themselves understand each other full well. Eventually, they spark up a romance that proves that love goes beyond the beauty and darkness of their condition. The film is written and directed by Paul Dalio.

Ai-Ai delas Alas stars as Virgie, a not-so-beautiful woman who leaves home to be a nanny in Manila. The comedy film directed by Jose Javier Reyes also stars Zoren Legaspi, Megan Young, Sofia Andres, Lucas Magallano, and Alyson McBride. When Virgie decides to leave her home to take care of another family, she risks everything. She is portrayed as hideous but beyond that is a loving and caring heart. The whole sentiment of the film centers on working, not just for the pay, but out of love for others. In lieu of Mother’s Day, this is a recommended film for the Filipino family.
