The Story Behind “Two-Timer”

In a Facebook message exchange, Beverly shared the story behind her latest piece. She said that Christmas for her signified family so she told the organizers that instead of writing about love and love life, she wanted to talk about family.

Knowing that her audience would be made up of students who loved “hugot” lines, she however found a way to combine “hugot” and the true meaning of Christmas. “Bakit hindi ko pagsamahin ang hugot sa Pasko at ang totoong diwa nito (Why don’t I combine the “hugot” of Pasko and the true meaning of Christmas.),” she said.

Giving A Voice To Those Who Are Not Heard

She also added that with the piece, she wanted to remind everyone that Christmas is really for family. She noted that some people call themselves “Samahan ng Malalamig ang Pasko” or SMP because they do not have a love life in time for Christmas. For her, Christmas can be much colder if you do not have family to share it with.

As with her other poems, she wanted to give a voice to people who are not usually heard. In the case of “Two-Timer” she gives voice to a daughter who misses his father because he chose to be with another family.

A Daughter’s Emotional Plea

The piece starts with the usual “hugot” lines that one typically hears in her pieces. She starts with lines such as “Ang lamig ng simoy ng hangin, kasing-lamig ng pakikitungo mo sa akin” and “Bakit ako ang tinuring mong pangalawa, kahit ako mong ako ang nauna?”

Towards the end of the piece however, she shouts out “Hindi na ako ang nag-iisa mong unica hija, Papa! (I am no longer your unica hija, Papa!)” Amidst reactions from the audience, her real message came out – this was an emotional plea of a daughter to her father, who chose to be with his second family rather than his first.

Her recent video which she shared on her Facebook page has been viewed 48,000 times and shared over 1,400 times.
