VENOM Official Trailer 2 Breakdown

Venom’s second official trailer is out. And while the original teaser trailer failed in that it didn’t provide a clue as to what Venom was about, it looks like Sony’s dropped the ball this time around for the exact opposite reason. To give it straight, Venom’s newest trailer basically spoils the whole movie. We’ll talk about that in a bit. Regardless, it’s still got people excited, so let’s break it down.

Venom: Enough  with the Superheroes

“The world has enough superheroes.” That is very true. The super genre is now supersaturated with both good and bad films.  The solution? Create an anti-hero. They’re darker, unbound by the same moral standards as heroes, and overall, more complex. But Sony is mistaken if they think Venom is the first anti-hero to take the big-screen. Right now, we have Deadpool. Don’t get us wrong; of course we’re excited for Venom. But given its competition, Sony has a lot of work cut out for them.

That said, the trailer looks amazing. The symbiote physics look extremely nasty… which is how they should look. And while Venom doesn’t actually say his iconic “eat your brains” catchphrase, he does say what’s on his mind. I’ve read a lot of comics but I have never seen Venom say the word “turd” until now.

But let’s be real. After how encouraging the first trailer (not the teaser) was, did we really need another one?

The Problem with Film Trailers

This is the part where I complain about what I’ve seen. Is the trailer entertaining? Yes. Does it give us a clue as to what we can expect? Absolutely. Unfortunately, it does this too well.

Remember how the Batman v Superman trailer spoiled Doomsday? What about how the Terminator Genisys trailer gave away the Robo-John Connor plot twist? That’s exactly the problem with this one. For example, we knew Carlton Drake was the mastermind. We also knew the symbiote Riot would be in the movie. We did not know Carlton Drake was going to be Riot’s host. It was entertaining to watch, sure. But a trailer is supposed to entice you to see the movie. it isn’t meant to condense entire the plot into 3 minutes of storytime.

Recall as well 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, where Sony actually placed the ending sequence of Spidey vs Rhino in the trailer. Now take a look at the ending clip of this trailer. All things considered, fans may actually have more reason to worry than we first thought.

So. Based on all the trailers we have, will Venom be a good film? Hard to say. There’s a lot of risk here for one of comic history’s most iconic characters. And there is a chance this movie is building more hype than it can live up to. But fingers crossed, we won’t be disappointed.
