Families playing parlor games

Christmas parlor games are always a sure way to spice up the celebration. Aside from a chance at winning coveted prizes, the games help you build fun memories with your loved ones. If you’re wondering what parlor games to play this Christmas, check out the ones that we listed below! We even made sure they’re COVID-safe for you!

5 Covid-19 Safe Family Christmas Games

Pinoy Henyo

This game is a tried and tested way to get everyone invested and willing to participate. Here, family members play in pairs. One of the players will have to guess a word assigned to them by asking anything that could be related to the word. Meanwhile, the pair can only answer the questions with “Oo/Yes”, “Hindi/No”, and “Pwede/Maybe” to help the one who is guessing.

To add some thrill to this game, there is an imposed time limit. Answers that are anything other than what is stated above will result in deducted time. We also suggest using categories and words that play to some of your family’s inside jokes and shared experiences. Doing so will make the players ask questions that bring up fond memories and lots of laughter!

COVID SAFETY: This game doesn’t need physical contact. If you’re playing it face to face, the players can stay six feet apart and continue to wear masks. You can also play this game through video calls with other family members.

Singing Bee

Get your voices warmed up because you can only play this game by singing! To play Singing Bee, round up a list of songs to play – make sure that everyone is likely to know the songs! After getting your playlist ready, put them on shuffle and start playing a song. Have it play for 30 seconds before stopping the song. Players then race to be the first one to raise their hands and finish the song. If the first player sings the wrong words, then the next one who raises their hands gets a turn and so on. The player who gets to sing the right lyrics and melody is declared the winner.

This game will definitely get everyone laughing when all the misheard lyrics are sung with amazing confidence. It’s even funnier when the, ahem, tone-deaf relatives start belting their hearts out!  Besides, nothing can go wrong with playing some tunes that get everyone’s head bobbing on beat!

You can even play this TikTok as a warm-up before the game!

Rolling Egg Relay

Relay games always seem to get everyone jumping up and down in excitement and yelling out encouragement. That’s why we bring you one of our favorites! To play this game, you will need a flat piece of paper folder or hard cardboard for each player and some eggs.

Divide the family into two or more teams. Each team is assigned ten eggs. Have the player of each team lined up side by side and a little distance away from each other. The goal is to shoot the eggs at the designated basket at the front of the line. To do this, teams must pass the egg from one player to another using only the piece of cardboard that is given to them.

Players are not allowed to fold the cardboard and are only allowed to balance the egg on the flat surface. Doing so increases the game’s challenge since players will have to walk towards the next player while balancing the egg. They must also ensure that they don’t pass the egg too fast or else it will roll off the next player’s cardboard!

COVID SAFETY: This game has some minimal physical contact but can still be done with the face masks on. Players would also not have to face each other as they are lined side by side.

Pin the Nose

If you know “pin the tail on the donkey” then this is the same game. For this, you first need to prepare printed-out pictures of your family members’ faces. Cut out the nose area and shuffle them around. The players will then pick a nose each and determine to whose face the nose belongs to.

Once they have chosen which picture to place the nose on, the game master will stick the nose to the player’s forehead using double-sided tape. The game master also needs to place the tape on the backside of the cut-out nose picture. Do this so that the nose will stick to the main picture. The player will have to spin at least five times before attempting to place the nose on the picture using only his forehead. The player that placed the correct nose closest to how the picture should look wins!

This game is a great opportunity to get some funny pictures. Most players go cross-eyed and make funny faces trying to see if they’re pinning the nose properly. They also look funny dizzily putting their foreheads on the pictures. And of course, the resulting pictures from the games will really have you laughing your heart out!

COVID SAFETY: This game has some minimal physical contact but can still be done with the face masks on. Body fluids such as sweat or spit may transfer to the main pictures while players are pinning the nose. We recommend printing different pictures for each player to minimize possible transfers.

Charades

The last on this list is a game everybody knows and loves. Players will have to guess the word or phrase that another player is acting out. Just like in Pinoy Henyo, we recommend that the words and phrases are those that bring up fond memories.

This game always creates a much-needed comedic break and opportunities to capture funny videos. It also really tests how creative each player can be and how well the family knows each other to be able to communicate through actions alone.

These games are as fun as they come. But, any game you play will be enjoyable if everybody is a good sport about it (in other words, no “kill-joys” allowed!). And remember, the important thing isn’t the prizes but rather the bonding experience everyone will get! If there’s one thing this pandemic made us realize, it’s that time spent with your loved ones should be treasured the most!
