Approximately 90% of local subscribers watch anime, and on a global scale, about 50% of subscribers watched their favorite anime series and movies on the platform in the course of 2021 alone. Filipino anime fans might be familiar with anime production companies like Studio Ghibli, Toei Animation, Madhouse Inc., and Kyoto Animation. And just recently, entertainment platform Netflix signed a deal with Japan’s Studio Colorido animation studio to expand its anime programming. Although Studio Colorido may not *yet* be as widely known in Philippines compared to the aforementioned anime production companies, they sure have a shot to winning the hearts of Filipino anime-lovers. With that said, here are some anime films produced by Studio Colorido that you should watch. Anime Movies by Studio Colorido You Should Check Out That Might *Soon* be on Netflix A Whisker Away (2020) Photo via IMDB A Whisker Away is a fantasy-romance anime film released in 2020. At the moment, this is the only Studio Colorido anime movie that is available to stream on Netflix Philippines. It is about a girl who is head over heels in love with her classmate. She makes repeated attempts to win his affection and eventually resorts to transforming herself into a cat. Taifuu no Noruda (2015) Photo via IMDB Also known as “Typhoon Noruda”. The film is set on the evening of the culture festival, at a middle school on a certain isolated island, . A boy who has played baseball his entire life decides to quit and gets into a fight with his best friend. Then out of nowhere, they come across a mysterious, red-eyed girl named Noruda, and a massive typhoon hits their middle school. Penguin Highway (2018) Photo via IMDB Penguin Highway is a stylized version of its original title, “Pengin Haiwei”. It started as a Japanese science fiction novel by Tomihiko Morimi published in 2010. The story begins with the sudden appearance of penguins in a village that is hundreds of miles from the sea. A smart fourth-grader then takes it upon himself to solve the mystery. He later finds out that the uncanny incident is somehow linked to a young woman working at a dental clinic. This novel was then into a manga adaptation in 2018. Then an anime film adaptation by Studio Colorido, which premiered in the same year. Drifting Home (2022) Photo via IMDB To kickstart Netflix’s newly inked partnership with Studio Colorido, they will be releasing a nautical adventure anime movie entitled “Drifting Home”. The film is about a group of friends breaking into an abandoned apartment complex when a strange phenomenon occurs, and the group finds that the apartment complex they broke into is already floating through a vast ocean. If all that’s not enough, there’s also an untitled Tomotaka Shibayama film under Studio Colorido productions scheduled to be released on 2024. That might be something you should look out for!
