Tawag Ng Tanghalan

POPCORN TIME LIVE BLOG/RECAP: Joylaine Canonio has proved herself worthy of the “golden mikropono” as she beat daily winner Sherwin Celis on yesterday’s show keeping her title as Tawag Ng Tanghalan’s defending champion. Today, the inspiring teacher battles new contenders, hoping to get her third win.

Tawag Ng Tanghalan Jan 20 Performances

First challenger was Anthony De Guzman from Tondo, Manila. First off, Anthony is bisexual. It took him awhile to come out to his parents because of fear that he won’t be accepted. He was surprised to know that when he finally did, his family and most especially his father gave him the support he didn’t expect. Anthony works as a vocalist and florist, and now he is ready to take on the stage with the song, “Moon River.”

“Moon River” was a perfect choice for Anthony because he was able to give a poetic and classy performance says Hurado Karylle. Hurado K Brosas agreed with Karylle but said it was too safe for a competition like this.

Marjurie Vergara was  the next challenger of the day. Marjurie is twenty seven years old and stays at Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur with her two kids. Her husband is currently in Taiwan working as factory worker. Marjurie is an out-of-school-youth teacher who goes to homes of young people making sure they get good education since there isn’t any centers available yet. Marjurie sang “Didn’t We Almost Have It All” by Whitney Houston hoping to give their kids a better life and add to what she and her husband have been saving for the construction of their home.

Punong hurado Ogie Alcasid said he was about to signal for the gong but saw that Marjurie was fighting so he allowed her to go on. He said the pitch was too high for her and that Marjurie was nervous from the get go.

Last contender was Kimberly Adrales from Barugo, Leyte. Kimberly is third year Secondary Education student and usually represents her school in singing contests. Kimberly’s mom is a housewife while her father is a “habal habal” driver and also the barangay’s electrician. She sang “Luha” by the Aegis hoping to win the contest and have the ability to put herself through school.

Hurado Yeng says song choice and vibrato was excellent however she needed some work in connecting with the audience through her gestures. Texture and quality of voice was very good said Hurado Erik Santos and she was able to perform an Aegis song with “flying colors.”
