POPCORN TIME LIVE BLOG: On yesterday’s episode of Tawag Ng Tanghalan, defending champion Rommel Collao lost to daily winner Froilan Canlas just after a day of hanging on to his victory against semi-finalist Sam Mangubat. In today’s Nov. 30 episode, Froilan needs to prove that he deserves a slot in the upcoming semi-finals.

Tawag Ng Tanghalan November 30 Contestants vs Froilan Canlas

Tatay Peter from Metro Manila got the gong despite his remarkable tone and vocal quality. Kayla thinks he could have had a better performance if his energy on stage is much more controlled.

Geoff from Visayas sings ‘It Might Be You’

Rey Valera praised Geoff Tañales for being able to make his vocals “float” despite its power. The head of the panel thought Geoff’s voice wouldn’t work for “It Might Be You,” but he was surprised by the outcome. He then told Geoff that he’d be up against a good champion, so he really should bring his A-game in case he wins the daily round.

Geoff, a seaman, has taken a break from regular work to focus on family life with his wife Karen. They are hoping to have a child soon. This prompts Rey Valera to joke about forgetting about condoms to succeed in their baby plan. Later, Rey apologizes to the public, saying it was just a joke that meant no harm.

‘Kikay’ Jubaira from Mindanao sings ‘Just Give Me A Reason’

Ira, 16 years old from Zamboanga City, is the third contender of the day. Her rendition of “Just Give Me A Reason” by Pink (featuring Nate Ruess) impresses the judges, but they later said she could use more practice. Vice Ganda lauds her stage presence, saying she looks like a model. Jubaira got her looks from her parents — Chinese dad and Filipina mom. The Grade 11 STEM student happens to be passionate about cosmetics.

Hurado Billy Joe Crawford thinks Jubaira has a good voice, but she needs more vocal training to perform better. Hurado Yeng Constantino thinks her voice could be better with ballads. “Just Give Me A Reason” needs angas and grit that Ira was not quite able to deliver.

Since Tatay Peter from Metro Manila got the gong, only Geoff and Ira were qualified to face-off with new champion Froilan. ‘Husbandladeer’ Geoff won by a couple of points, garnering an average of 90.4 percent against Jubaira’s 88 percent.

Tawag ng Tanghalan Nov. 30: Froilan Canlas vs Geoff Tañales.

To snag the kampeon title from Froilan, Geoff sings “Forever” by Kenny Loggins. He has been singing for events like weddings, so this song choice is right in his wheelhouse.

On the other hand, Froilan sings “Nakapagtataka” by Sponge Cola (originally by Hajji Alejandro). Froilan reveals another layer of himself as an artist with this song choice. The audience seems very pleased, particularly when Froilan switches to falsetto.

Who won? Froilan gets another week as Tanghalan kampeon! The judges gave Froilan an average score of 94.6 percent, while Geoff got 90.8 percent.
